Ball games!

Rocket League

Rocket League

The global phenomenon! The team at Psyonix has such a smash hit with the amazingly fun Rocket League that they saw online gamers set their servers on fire. Literally. With traffic. No joke

Perfectly blending intense competitive play with fantastic mechanics, and an ‘Easy to play, impossible to master’ feel this game is heaps of fun especially with a group of friends. It's like football but with cars powered by rockets. Do we need to explain further? No? Didn't think so.

FIFA '06 and PES '09

FIFA vs PES

How dare we mention these two games in the same breath! Well, for the purposes of this short profile, we'll ignore the controversy and chuck these two football videogame behemoths together!

FIFA may have had the backing of "official" leagues for a long time, but this wasn't its only strength - many consider its the ultimate football "sim" with its realistic physics and ball handling. On the other end of the spectrum we had the (initially at least) slightly amateurish random naming of players and teams in PES (which started out as International Super Soccer!) but with some brilliant "arcade" style handling. This split the modern football gaming crowd into two distinct groups.

Things have changed a lot these days though and you'd be hard pressed to convince fans of either game that they should try playing the other. So, we'll put them in a tournament together and see what happens shall we?

Sensible Soccer

Sensible Soccer

The OG football game of years past. Sensible Soccer was doing football back when some of us were struggling to tie our bootlaces, and others were wondering where such an infuriatingly fun football game could exist.

The top down view provided great perspective on how to play around your opponents and the oh so satisfying ‘after touch’ feature will still have you screaming after you've managed to bend one like Beckham.

He was only 16 that year of course…

Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe

Speedball 2

Possibly the greatest ever "future sport" game? Yes, definitely (oh, yeah Chris is slightly biased).

Not really Rugby, Football or American Football, and possibly inspired by the film Rollerblade, the Bitmap Brothers continues their string of amazing games in the 90s with a frenetic sports game where not only could you "beat up" (or "tackle") your opponents players, but you could properly RPG style ramp up your player stats and build the ultimate super-team.

Its probably best to stop talking about the awesomeness of this game, else we'll run out of room...
